State licensing, in one place.

Getting licensed is the first door, and every state puts it somewhere different. Here is who issues the licence where we have members, what that state calls it, and the official page to start on. Oregon and Washington today, more as the network grows.

Oregon · Adult Foster Home

Licensed by Oregon Department of Human Services, Aging and People with Disabilities (ODHS, APD). Oregon says foster, not family. Multnomah County is the exception to everything below: it licenses and inspects its own Adult Care Homes locally, so start with the county rather than the state if your home is inside it.

Washington · Adult Family Home

Licensed by Department of Social and Health Services, Residential Care Services (DSHS, ALTSA). Washington says family, not foster. The licence covers two to six adults who are not related to you, and the application is filed online, so you will need a Secure Access Washington account before you start rather than part way through.

Every other state

Your state licenses these homes too.

Every state runs licensing through a government agency. Only the name changes: Human Services in one state, Health or Aging and Disability Services in the next.

Search your state’s name together with “adult foster home licensing” or “adult family home licensing”, or call your local Aging and Disability office and ask who handles small residential care homes. Either route lands you on the office that holds the application.

After the licence

The licence is the floor, not the business.

The state will tell you how to get approved. It will not tell you how to fill the beds, price a private pay room, or survive the first inspection with your paperwork in order. That is what the room is for.
